Swamp Rabbit Trail Tee
An invaluable asset to our community, the Swamp Rabbit Trail marries beauty, revitalization and community along it's path.
The trail began as a short-line railroad in 1888 locally known as the Swamp Rabbit. The years to follow for the railroad were filled with financial struggles, failed expansions and periods of abandonment. In 1920 a timber company purchased the railroad and shipped lumber for 37 years through the G&NR (Greenville and Northern Railway), finally helping the railroad to define its identity. For a period of time, the G&NR operated passenger excursions on the weekends. Rail traffic died out in the 1970's and 1980's leaving everyone questioning the railroad's fate.
Due to forward-thinking leadership and generous funding, the Swamp Rabbit Trail exists today for the enjoyment of over 500,000 bikers and walkers annually. It was restored in 2009 and continues to grow North and South each year. Picturesque views and quaint local businesses along the trail are just a few of its endearing qualities. All who visit the trail fall in love.
